Save our trees

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I am very concerned about the rate at which our trees are being cut down with very little attempt by most persons to replant. It is alarming that most forested areas in the country are no longer forested but are now desolate, causing many problems for the country.
The trees are the lungs of the earth which enable us to breathe. When we exhale carbon dioxide, the trees absorb it, convert it into oxygen and release it into the atmosphere, which of course, we breathe. The trees help to prevent landslides, droughts and loss of fertile land for crops, which in turn, help to prevent the loss of lives.
I am appealing to all of us to replant at least one tree to help to sustain our lives. Not all of us might be guilty of cutting down trees, but we need to play a part in replanting them, as the effects of deforestation are not partial. Whether you cut down trees or not, we are all affected. If the trees are replanted, the level of carbon dioxide will decrease, thus giving rise to the level of oxygen, permitting us to breathe effectively and therefore, eliminating some of the respiratory problems that we experience. Replant the trees; help them help us live.
