Scientific council reveals plans for 'Technology Month'
published: Friday | October 22, 2004

By Robert Lalah, Staff Reporter

THE SCIENTIFIC Research Council (SRC), an agency of the Ministry of Commerce, Science and Technology, yesterday unveiled its plans for November, which will be celebrated as 'National Science and Technology Month'.

The idea behind the activities of the month, according to Dr. Audia Barnett, executive director of the SRC, is to help to highlight the role science and technology play in people's everyday lives. This, she said, is essential, as the role of both are becoming increasingly significant.

INCREASED EMPHASIS

"If we are to make that quantum leap from a developing country to become a developed country, then science and technology must play a considerable role," Dr. Barnett said. The executive director elaborated, stating that the difference between First and Third World countries lies in the prudent application of science and technology by the former.

Phillip Paulwell, minister of commerce, science and technology, shared Dr. Barnett's view, noting that the time has come for an increased emphasis to be placed on science and technology.

"Our traditional exports are under threat. We, therefore, must now work together, using science and technology, to develop the highest quality products and so capture niche markets," he said.

INNOVATION AWARD

The minister also announced plans to establish a biannual award for innovation, as it relates to science and technology. Details of the award, he said, would be revealed on November 26. Mr. Paulwell explained that the award, which will be accompanied by a cash prize, will be open to businesses and individuals and will be given to the group or person who develops the most innovative invention through the employment of science and technology.

Among the activities planned by the council for November, are a series of workshops, student consultation sessions with international scientists, an awards banquet, health week at the Northern Caribbean University and the annual science and technology conference and exposition.
