published: Monday | October 25, 2004

'OPERATION KINGFISH', the new crime plan, yesterday netted 28 go-fast boats suspected of being used in the trafficking of illegal drugs. Six persons were taken into custody in Trelawny and St. James.

According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), a task force comprising members from the police, the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and the Jamaica Customs Enforcement Team raided two boatyards in Rock District, Trelawny and Greenwood, St. James in an ope-ration which began shortly after 4:00 a.m.

Nineteen of the 28 boats were reportedly taken from Green-wood. The six persons, whose identities were not disclosed were taken into custody and are being questioned by detectives from Kingston.

In the meantime, four persons from Matthews Lane and one from Heywood Street, downtown Kingston, were arrested and charged yesterday by the 'Operation Kingfish' task force. They were arrested and charged for illegally abstracting electricity.

Arrested and charged were: Patricia Hylton, a 49-year-old higgler; Miguel Hylton, a 50-year-old higgler, Clifford Phipps, 31, and Salome Biggs, 28, all from Matthews Lane and Errol Lee, a 44-year-old shop operator of 19 Heywood Street.

The arrests were made after a joint police/military team carrying out an operation in the area about 9:00 a.m., discovered several illegal connections to the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) network.
