Spearfishing for criminals
published: Monday | October 25, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

NATIONAL SECURITY Minister Dr. Peter Phillips' 'Operation Kingfish' seems to have some of the ingredients for even a partial success and his party's delegates and middle-class observers may have been impressed at the presentation of this presidential aspirant sounding quite prime ministerial.

This initiative should be supported in whatever wholesome and practical way we can. There is a credibility factor in all of this, thus he emphasises no one will be immune.

This I think is a message to all leaders of criminal enterprises to cease their activities or run away from this latest onslaught because he may just be resolutely zeroing on them this time for better or for worse.

Minister Phillips is absolutely right that this kind of rampant criminality cannot be allowed to continue.

What is needed from an enforcement point of view is action based on greater levels of intelligence gathering; the kind that would be available to the assortment of dons and area leaders. The Kingfish initiative would then be driven by spear-fishing techniques instead of the hapless use of net fishing. It should be demonstrated clearly that a multifaceted approach must be taken in order that the police are not again given baskets to carry water. An effort must be made by the Government, private sector and all its agencies to make guns and criminal minds redundant.

I am, etc.,
