AFTER SPENDING eight days behind bars at the Horizon Park Remand Centre in St. Andrew, Matthews Lane strongman Donald 'Zekes' Phipps was released from police custody yesterday.
Phipps was offered bail in the sum of $1.5 million last Thursday by Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey, when he appeared in the Corporate Area Criminal Court.
Attorney-at-law Churchill Neita, Q.C., who is representing Phipps, told The Gleaner yesterday that his client was unable to take up the bail offer at the time because of police interrogation in relation to the over $9 million found in his possession.
Phipps, who is charged with illegal possession of and dealing in ganja, illegal possession of ammunition and unlawful possession of pharmaceutical products, will return to court on November 2. He was arrested and charged two Sundays ago, following a massive military/police operation in the Matthews Lane community, downtown Kingston. While on bail, he is expected to report to the Central Police Station three times per week.
