A HIV wasting syndrome: weight loss of greater than 10 per cent of body weight, plus either unexplained chronic diarrhoea (for more than one month) or chronic weakness and unexplained prolonged fever (for more than one month).
HIV encephalopathy: clinical findings of disabling cognitive and/or motor dysfunction interfering with activities of daily
living, progressing over weeks to months, in the absence of a concurrent illness or condition, other than HIV infection, which could explain the findings.
Clinical stage one includes asymptomatic condition; stage two includes weight loss of less than 10 per cent body weight, minor occurrences such as fungal nail infections, recurrent oral ulceration, herpes within the last five years; stage three includes weight loss of greater than 10 per cent body weight, unexplained diarrhoea, unexplained prolonged fever, severe bacterial infection; stage four includes HIV wasting syndrome, pneumonia, diarrhoea, brain wasting and a host of other conditions.
