Food for thought
published: Thursday | October 28, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I CAME across these beautiful words today and thought I would share it with my fellow Jamaicans. Those of us, like myself, who were not yet born would not know the pride that radiated nationwide at that time.

These were the words of a prayer said by the Rt. Rev. Percival W. Gibson near midnight when Jamaica became an independent nation in 1962. It was most appropriate then because we were preparing to face the challenges of the future on our own. It is still appropriate today as our nation is at another midnight where we face so many challenges with crime and violence, the economy, indiscipline, etc.

"Into Thy hands O Lord God our Father we commend our nation and people at this time. Look down O Lord upon our country and crown our independence with faith, hope and courage. Send down thy light and thy truth that they may lead us into paths of fellowship and peace."

Jamaica is such a beautiful and blessed country. Let us all evaluate ourselves each day and see if our words, actions and deeds are in the best interest of ourselves, our family and our country. Let us also try to live peaceably with each other.

I am, etc.,

AUTIA CRUMP (MRS.)

Kingston 2
