WESTERN BUREAU:
GODFREY STEWART High stayed on course for their first ever berth in the quarter-finals of the ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup after they upset former champions Cornwall College 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader played at Frome Sports Club yesterday.
Jason Bantin's fifth-minute strike was enough for the Carl 'Long Life' Palmer-coached team to win its second game in the round and it is the only team still prefect after two games played so far. This was Cornwall's first loss of the season.
The win takes the Sav-la-Mar-based school to six points on top of Group One ahead of Cornwall and Brown's Town High - both on three points.
The game was played in a great atmosphere as the large crowd of home supporters willed on their team to its biggest ever football triumph.
EARLY PERSISTENCE
Their early persistence paid off handsomely as Bantin was allowed some space on the right side of the Cornwall defence and gave goalkeeper Tedroy Watson no chance with a well-placed shot.
The winners of the six groups plus the best two second-placed teams will advance to the quarter-final round.
Meanwhile, Glenmuir High bounced back from their 0-0 draw in Saturday's first round to hammer Brimmer Vale 6-0 thanks to two goals each from captain Sean Cousins and Cornelius Lamey in their Group Five game.
The win takes then to four points and the top, with Seaforth High whose game against Old Harbour was called off for the third straight year due to crowd problems.
Defending champions Frome Technical edged Cedric Titus 1-0 in the second game at Frome, Tristan Cunningham scoring a thunderous first half free kick but they are second to Black River in Group Two on goal difference after the St. Elizabeth school beat William Knibb 2-0 at Jarrett Park.
Mile Gully and Lennon are tied on four points each atop Group Three. Lennon edged Porus 2-1 while Mile Gully and Munro played out a 1-1 draw.
Clarendon College's perfect win record ended at 11 games after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bellefield in Group Four and are tied on four points each while Titchfield stayed on top of Group Six despite being held 0-0 by Dinthill Technical.
Garvey Maceo spanked Annotto Bay 4-0 to stay in touch as they have a game in hand.
