THE EDITOR, Sir:
I HAVE been reading with much interest the various comments concerning the state of education in our country. In my opinion we are getting what we are paying for. If we are not prepared to make the necessary investment where it matters most then we should not be surprised if we get poor results.
I believe that our government is only paying lip service to the importance of early childhood education. Every day I hear more talk about what the government is planning to do for early childhood education but I do not see any tangible actions in terms of the allotment of the necessary resources to improve the delivery of education at that level.
Unless the government is willing to make the sacrifice that will be needed to build the foundation then every year they will have to do remedial work on the upper structure or it will completely collapse. In order to improve our results in years to come it may be necessary to make some adjustments to the amount of money allotted to the university and spend more money on early childhood.
In an era of scarce resources somebody will have to suffer and it is easier for university students to pay more in order to rescue early childhood.
I am, etc.,
