New head elected for principal group
published: Friday | October 29, 2004

By George Henry, Gleaner Writer

SPALDINGS, Clarendon:

THE ASSOCIATION of Principals and Vice-principals has elected a new president to oversee its affairs over the next three years.

He is Alphansus Davis, principal of the Spaldings High School in Clarendon.

NEW ROLE

Mr. Davis, who served as president for two previous three-year terms, was elected at the association's annual retreat, held at the Grand Lido Braco Resort in Trelawny two weeks ago. He replaces Stanley Skeene, principal of May Day High in Manchester, and will serve during the executive term for 2004 to 2007.

Mr. Davis said that there is a need to sensitise the public about the true picture of assessment for student performance in the newly upgraded high schools.

He said that individuals needed to look at the quality of the student intake against the quality of the output, noting that CXC examination results are not a true measure of student performance.

Mr. Davis stated that as a part of plans, he intends to organise workshops and seminars for principals in the newly upgraded schools.

NECESSARY CHANGES

He also pointed out that with the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME) close to reality, programmes in the schools will have to be offered with that in mind.

According to the new president, the association will be spending time to study the various programmes, in order to make representations to the ministry of education on changes necessary to move the education system forward.
