Letter of the day - Time to set up a Pothole Ministry
published: Saturday | October 30, 2004
THE EDITOR, Sir:WHERE HAS the vision gone for the birth of a Pothole Ministry? We on a daily basis commend Vando Palmer, CEO of the National Works Agency (NWA) for the marvellous job he has been doing, especially in the Corporate Area. Our elites of morning radio, Allan and Dorraine, have never hesitated to graciously appeal to Mr. Palmer for help to address various roadways that need urgent attention. Commuters who traverse in Kingston, especially in the mornings, often call in to report the mayhem as they encounter such in the nail-biting traffic of Kingston's routes. And, of course Mr. Palmer, the efficient boss of the NWA in the most, timely manner, has always been commended for easing the pain. Kudos to Dorraine and Allan for their expertise.
Now to rural Jamaica. Mr. Palmer, would you please Sir, assign a second Vando Palmer to deal with the potholes that plague the streets of the North Coast. The main road that leads from Ocho Rios eastwards to Oracabessa, particularly along the terrain from Tower Isle to Stewart Town, highlighting the main road section from Pompano Bay continuing east to Rio Nuevo onwards, is in an atrocious state. Please do not wait for the North Coast Highway team to reach there - our lives are too precious. This area needs mending now. I was so embarrassed recently, whilst travelling in the vehicle of a prospective investor, when he had to be skipping and hopping around the potholes (they're really deep ditches), an experience I personally had a few years aback when I penned to the news media about the Fern Gully eight km stretch.
Please, Mr. Palmer what about implementing the Pothole Ministry? Not Road and Works or Works Agency. Jamaica's potholes, I am convinced with this sole Ministry, would be repaired more expeditiously. In concluding, I shall be very happy to be employed in the administration of this vital entity.
I am, etc.,
C. DIONNE CASSIE
