THE EDITOR, Sir:JAMAICANS, LIKE people elsewhere in the world, expect a lot of their educators, and they ought to, because they pay their taxes.
The education system, like the economy, is in shambles. I would like to draw attention to the problems faced by one particular school in this parish of Trelawny. The book rental system is in shambles. Inadequate supplies of textbooks are allotted to the school. It is sheer hell for the teacher in charge of the rental system to decide which students are given textbooks. Of course, the slower students are usually the ones left out. It is now almost the end of October and some students have not even been given one book not even the English language text.
How will these kids get to improve their reading and comprehension skills? These are very poor kids who at times find it difficult to even purchase lunch.
In addition there are three copiers (machines) in the school; none works.
I wonder if this country is really serious about education. No doubt the crime rate is so high. We are certainly educating people for failure and crime.
I am, etc.,
