Heart Health Fund Run launched
published: Wednesday | November 3, 2004

ON NOVEMBER 28, the Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) will be staging its 25th annual Heart Health Fund Run.

The event, which was launched yesterday at the Liguanea Club, Knutsford Boulevard in New Kingston, will be staged at the Stadium East track on Sunday November 28, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Organisers note that this year's staging will be seeking to eclipse last year's 1,800 participants who ended up raising $1.1 million.

Arielle Levy, a fourth-grader of Alvernia Preparatory, one of the students who addressed the gathering, got the point across superbly. "It is imperative that we take care of our hearts," she stressed.

CORE OBJECTIVES

The event, the brainchild of the late Vic Higgs golfer and heart patient has two core objectives. It raises money to maintain the work of the HFJ, and encourages people of all ages to focus on the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles by recognising the benefits of regular exercise.

Deborah Chen, general manager of the HFJ, explained that the fund run was for everyone, "from a baby in a stroller to a senior citizen in a wheelchair. You do your laps at your own pace and you are not competing against anybody," said
Ms. Chen.

Dr. Knox Hagley, chairman of the HFJ, told the gathering that "just like any matter concerning the heart, the fund run is serious business. It is not just a social event. The whole idea is to sensitise our community to take care of ourselves in particular through exercise," he said.
