THE EDITOR, Sir:
I am strongly of the view that democracy is the best form of Government designed by man. I also believe, that it is the most difficult to manage, allowing as it does, for this clashing of interests.
Coming hot on the heels of the decision of the Jamaica Labour Party central executive to go ahead as planned with the November 6 conference, it should surprise no one that the Pearnel Charles camp is "bawling" out fowl.
Pearnel has had such a strange life inside the Jamaica Labour Party. I make no secret of the fact that I have never viewed Pearnel as a leader, but I have always marvelled at his commitment to the Jamaica Labour Party. Nobody inside the party has been ridiculed and belittled by the party leader as Pearnel has. Nobody has bounced back from those despairing times as he has and nobody wants to lead the party as he does.
Notwithstanding all of these attributes, the best of all the years have gone for Pearnel. Pearnel is no fool, he knows very well that he and his followers will be "politically dead" by November 6, 2004.
I appreciate and respect Mr. Charles for his courage to challenge Senator Bruce Golding. It is too late for Pearnel to drop out. Pearnel must continue the race, but finish it within the convention of decency, unity and respect.
As a friend of the Jamaica Labour Party I am optimistic about the party's future, because I see a party that has a team to effectively move this country forward. I am optimistic because I am a "Labourite" and to be a Labourite is to be great. I believe in the principles of the Jamaica Labour Party.
I call upon Mr. Charles and Mr. Golding to put their differences aside and unite the party. It is commonly accepted as truth that "united we stand and divided we fall". Let us build unity and foster peace. Do it for the Jamaica Labour Party, do it for Jamaica and do it for democracy. The word is still love. A full time now!
