Charles to file injunction today
published: Wednesday | November 3, 2004

JAMAICA LABOUR Party (JLP) leadership aspirant, Pearnel Charles, says the promised court injunction to delay this weekend's election for a new party leader should be filed by today.

Charles indicated on Monday that he would ask the courts to prevent the JLP from holding the election for party leader on the grounds that the voters' list is flawed.

Checks by The Gleaner revealed that up to yesterday afternoon, the injunction was still not filed. However, in an interview yesterday, Mr. Charles said the decision has already been made to go to court.

IN ATTORNEY'S HANDS

"It is in the hands of the attorneys right now and I am sure it won't be longer than tomorrow (today). There will be some announcement tomorrow," he said.

After the breakdown in negotiations to settle the voters' list controversy with his rival Bruce Golding last weekend, Mr. Charles instructed his attorneys to file the injunction "in an effort to uphold the party's constitution."

A statement from Mr. Charles' campaign team explained that the injunction is an attempt to protect the rights of 2,000 persons left off the delegates' list and to ensure a clean election for the post of party leader.
