By Kavelle Christie, Staff ReporterLIKE THE swift splendour of a shooting star, so it was with the launch of JamRock Sports Bar and Grill's 'Singles Speed Dating'.
Through the doors of the bar, poured the beautiful people. It seemed as though it would not only be a meeting of the minds at an event that attracted good-looking, mature people.
As time wore on, one had to ask, 'Where are the people who came to speed date?' Most of the 'beautiful people', it seemed, had simply come to eat.
A group of four sauntered in: two girls and two young men. They, along with two other persons who had come for the event, were selected to participate in the 'sample' speed date.
One of the volunteers, Orrin Scott-Stewart, 23, assessed speed dating as, "A lot of fun, and something that's not done in Jamaica as yet... I plan to sign up one of the forms."
ENTRY FORM
To be a part of the speed dating scene, one must sign an entry form available at Zip 103 FM, Derrymore Road, or at JamRock, New Kingston. The completed forms may be submitted at either location; after which the participants will be contacted by the organisers.
According to Maxine Mitchell, the public relations officer of Communications and Business Solutions, which worked in tandem with Zip 103 FM and JamRock for the event, "Speed dating will revolutionise dating... and is open to the 18-35 age group because those who are over 35 are usually married, or supposed to be in that frame of mind. "She went on to explain the format that speed dating is expected to take: "There will be eight tables, with two seats each. Each couple will then be allowed seven minutes to talk, after which they will move on to the next person...and at the end they will score each other using a score card."
MULTI-DATE
The event which is sponsored by Zip 103 FM, is intended to offer a safe and fun way to multi-date persons of the opposite sex. According to Pat Isaacs-Greene, manager of JamRock, they came up with the concept of speed dating because they "have a lot of young people who come here... between the ages of 18-40. So why not? You could meet someone who could be the right one."
After showing the audience, what speed dating was like, the event came to an end. Those who had dressed to tease and tantalise a potential mate, quickly blended into the festive atmosphere of the JamRock Sports Bar and Grill.
Speed dating will take place every Tuesday at JamRock beginning on November 9, between 6-8 p.m. The time, according to Ms. Mitchell, "Is a time that is convenient for JamRock, and should be for those who wish to attend. We do expect people to go there straight from work. They just have to slap on some makeup and come."
JamRock also celebrates its six month reopening anniversary under the theme 'November Rocks at JamRock.' Other activities include: poetry readings on Mondays, The Alternative and Rock mix on Wednesdays, Talent showcase on Thursdays, Friday Lyming, Cool Jammin' Saturdays and Mimosa Brunch on Sundays.
