Police Federation elects new chairman
published: Wednesday | November 10, 2004

By Omar Anderson Gleaner Writer

THE CENTRAL Executive of the Police Federation yesterday booted chairman, Inspector Handel Morgan, and elected new chairman Corporal Raymond Wilson.

Arising from a no-confidence motion, The Central Executive also elected a new general secretary, Corporal Hartley Stewart, replacing Corporal Wilson who had been serving in that position.

Speaking with The Gleaner, the new Federation chairman said The Central Executive was forced to move in the manner it did because of lingering problems with Inspector Morgan's leadership.

LEADERSHIP

He said matters regarding the former chairman's leadership and its effect on rank and file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) were discussed at a meeting earlier in the day.

"Coming out of these discussions, The Central Executive moved a no-confidence motion against the chairmanship of Inspector Morgan, followed by a vote in which I was elected the new chairman," Cpl. Wilson said.

He added that from as early as the beginning of July this year when Inspector Morgan assumed office, executive members expressed concern about his inter-personal skills and the general direction and running of the Federation's affairs.

"We believe even though we had identified these issues, they were not satisfactorily dealt with," the new Federation chairman remarked.

The Gleaner telephoned Inspector Morgan last night but was told he was in a meeting and could not comment.
