Pothole traps
published: Wednesday | November 10, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

KINDLY ALLOW me space in your columns to bring to the attention of your readers an extremely hazardous situation that now exists at the intersection of East Kings House Road, and East Kings House Circle.

A pothole has developed there which has, in the month or so if its existence, burst or damaged numerous motor vehicle tyres and inflicted serious damage to rims and front-ends. To make matters worse the pothole is located in an area where there are no street lights. In the event that a motorist falls victims to the pothole at night, which many have, he or she is forced to effect repairs in an area which is very dark and in which many pedestrians have been plagued by thieves over the years.

Efforts to have the pothole repaired by the NWA have been received with polite promises to notify the relevant person(s) but no action has to date been forthcoming. Will this be yet another case where someone has to sustain serious injury or death before corrective action will be taken?

In regard to the lack of street lights and the attendant dangers of that, we have been told that approval has been granted to erect a street light at the said intersection since January of 2004. However, this too apparently languishes on someone's desk, no doubt gathering dust.

While no one believed a certain politician's glib statement of being pothole-free by 2003, we in late 2004 would expect that a pothole, on a main road, which is capable of such damage would be considered a priority and be dealt with accordingly. In the meantime, motorists, please beware!

I am, etc.,
