Democracy in deep trouble
published: Thursday | November 11, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

OUR DEMOCRACY is in deep trouble as the never-ending political saga continues to rock the Jamaica Labour Party. One hopes that after 15 years in the political wilderness they would have learnt lessons, but alas, they are on their way to self-destruction. The present leadership debacle is a clear indication that there is no one as yet capable to manage that party, and by extension the country. If that is the way the party in question deals with their internal strife, then I am at pains to say that they should not get their hands on the levers of power in this country, at least for now.

Conflict within any organisation is natural but becomes a dangerous and disruptive force whenever 'personal glory' is staked on the outcome. The conflict taking place within the camp of the 'government in waiting' has developed into a bitter warfare because my observation tells me that more glory is staked which diminishes the hope of any real solution. Decision-making is paralysed because the intra-group within the party dare not make concessions for fear that these will be seized upon by the rival group as victory and a bridgehead for further advances. In this they are bent on ignoring the greater good in the interest of their country.

It is time the Jamaica Labour Party shows the country that it can work together in times of crisis. It is a mammoth task but it can be done if they abandon their individualistic perspective and choose instead the path of collective responsibility and participative decision-making. It is no light task but it can be done, so surprise the nation, JLP. We are listening and we are watching. The future of Jamaica could well be in your hands tomorrow.

I am, etc.,

HARVEY BROWN
