THE EDITOR, Sir:
ON THE morning of November 1, 2004, I was driving along East King's House Road on my way to work when I dropped into a very deep pothole, which instantly burst my right front tyre and damaged the rim of my right back tyre. The tyre was less than a year old but was so damaged that I had to buy a new one at a cost of $3,500, which I had great difficulty in finding.
In speaking to persons about the incident, I was surprised at the number of persons who had had similar experiences with the same pothole, which has been around for a long time and has not been repaired. One man at the tyre store showed me a big patch on his right front tyre that was caused by the same pothole. Apparently, once you drop into that pothole, you automatically get a flat tyre!
I would like to know why the relevant authority does not fix that particular pothole. Just putting a few big stones in the hole will prevent more tyres from blowing out. Will it take the Prime Minister's car or the Governor-General's car to drop in that pothole before anything is done? Can I sue the government for the $3,500 that it cost me to buy a new tyre? I certainly was not speeding, as the police who are always at the traffic light there can attest to.
There are similar potholes all over the Corporate Area, and you take your eyes off the road directly in front of you at your peril!
I am, etc.,
