Provide better conditions for N/Kgn cops
published: Tuesday | November 16, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I RECENTLY visited the New Kingston Police Post on Knustford Blvd and was appalled to see the conditions the men and women are working in.

This little 2x4 cubicle is home to an Inspector and about 12 other members of staff. The place is so small there is not even place to hang clothing or secure any type of valuables.

I was more concerned for the women stationed there because I saw nowhere that they had any privacy.

I was informed that the post was a temporary undertaking but this has been in existence going over four to five years with apparently no light at the end of the bureaucratic tunnel.

Minister Phillips, it's time for a proper, comfortable location to be secured for the tireless men and women of that post. Surely you can fast-track whatever arrangements are in the pipeline to make the workplace of these dedicated public servants more fitting and also a place that they want to come to.

GHETTO IN THE MAKING

The sick-out rate at this post is excessively high this is public record. There is not even a resident detective assigned there because of space constraints.

New Kingston right in the heart of Kingston's tourist area and several high-profile night clubs that go on from night till dawn needs better police representation.

The place is saturated with the homeless, the derelicts have a permanent resting place along the sidewalks of New Kingston, its so depressing.

If New Kingston is not properly policed I can see in the near future the beginning of the 'Up Town' ghetto in the making.

I am, etc,
