New body for education task force
published: Friday | November 19, 2004

PRIME MINISTER P.J. Patterson yesterday announced plans to establish a Transition Team to fast track the implementation of five key recommendations by the Task Force on Education.

Mr. Patterson told senior journalists at his Jamaica House office that he had already identified a leader for the Transition Team and the Transition Office should be functional by February, 2005. Other preparatory measures include the provision by January 2005 of the necessary costing to effect the five short-term recommendations contained in the task force report.

"The report points to significant changes to the education system and apparatus... We are going to have a reform unit to drive the changes," Mr. Patterson said.

Other measures announced by the Prime Minister include:

Meeting of Ministry of Education and Cabinet Reform Unit to begin to plot the organisational reform process for the ministry.

Cabinet's review of the Task Force report by December.

Tabling of document in the House of Representatives following Cabinet's review.

Discussion of recommendations with the public over the next month.

The education task force was chaired by Dr. Rae Davis, president of the University of Technology (UTech).
