Piped water declared clean
published: Friday | November 19, 2004

THE MINISTRY of Health yesterday lifted the water advisory issued after Hurricane Ivan, giving the green light to the public that piped water from the National Water Commission (NWC) system is now safe for consumption.

According to the ministry, data obtained from islandwide testing show no evidence that the water situation had not returned to pre-Ivan conditions. It also assured that the ministry would continue to monitor the water quality in all parishes and advised the public that where there are doubts about water safety, they must continue to treat by boiling.

Meanwhile, the NWC is now pumping an additional five million gallons of water per day since the passage of Hurricane Ivan, said Charles Buchanan, corporate public relations manager at the utility.

Mr. Buchanan attributed the additional water to the completion of the Great River to Lucea water project, which Prime Minister P.J. Patterson will officially commission into service today. The utility company said that the increase in output was also a result of major work that was undertaken islandwide by the company since the hurricane.

Meanwhile, the company is reporting a 100 per cent restoration of water supply to customers following the hurricane in early September, which pounded the island, causing widespread disruption in water supply.
