Racing with Red Stripe
published: Friday | November 19, 2004

By Barbara Ellington, Senior Gleaner Writer

ALTHOUGH MANY of the familiar faces of previous years were absent, the huge throng still had a whale of a time last Saturday for the 26th renewal of the Coolest Beer Company's Day at Caymanas Park.

From as early as 8:30 a.m., guests from across the island gathered at the Spanish Town Road Red Stripe complex for refreshment and fellowship prior to departing by motorcade to Caymanas Park.

One lucky couple, plus two members of the media, got the opportunity to ride in the super-size limousine with Managing Director Mark McKenzie and his wife, Betty. The VIP treatment continued at the track where guests were greeted by lovely hostesses in smart red and white ensemble, and led along the red carpeted walkway to the interior of spacious white tents.

THEME

This year's theme revolved around the islands of the Caribbean and Lorraine's Catering took the tastes of the region to the palates of everyone in their presentation of dishes, such as: pon de river (shrimp), saltfish balls with a mango dip; arroz con pollo and black beans with rice from Cuba, from the Bahamas: peas and rice with stewed conch, from Trinidad: mutton masala with roti bits and calypso chicken; and many Jamaican favourites.

Entertainment featured a mento band and some racy moves by dancing girls from Cuba.

But from massages to impromptu dance lessons, and from trivia contests to amateur punters placing bets, Red Stripe Superstakes Day was a memorable affair, and many cannot wait for next year.
