IN A near empty Tony Spaulding Sports Complex, Jamaica's young Reggae Boyz, while playing well, went down 1-0 to the Cayman Islands' senior football team
yesterday.
Jamaica dominated the game against the Caymanians and showed good skill in controlling possession, however, it was Cayman who broke the deadlock through an 82nd-minute goal from substitute Jaire Sanches.
Prior to Cayman's advantage, Jamaica should have been leading by a large margin had they just taken advantage of the numerous opportunities they were given.
At several points the game resembled a practice match, but then the pace increased and both teams, except in front of goal, pulled no punches.
In the box and in front of goal, though, 'shy' was the watch word. Luton Shelton, who is recovering from a thigh injury, looked a
shadow of himself and did the
unforgiveable when he failed to pull the trigger after beating his marker handsomely, a mistake he was made to rue.
MISSES GALORE
Chance after chance went
begging in that fashion.
In the 37th minute, three crosses whisked across the face of the Caymanian goal in the space of 15 seconds, with the Jamaicans in the box failing to make contact,
even though unmarked on all three occasions.
In the 54th minute, one of the more intricate moves down Cayman's right side saw Akeem Priestly knocking a ball across to Richard West, whose sliding attempt from six yards only succeeded in giving his opponents a goal kick.
The substitution of West for Horace Howell brought some excitement to an attack that lacked urgency. In one of his bold moves, he turned past his marker down the line and skipped the challenge of a second opponent before producing a beautiful square to teammate Irvin Elliott, who made a hash of the delivery. The intensity and frequency of chances increased, especially after the Jamaicans were brought to life after going down a goal. That goal came when a mix-up between Adrian Reid and Kieron Bernard, who were both having a flawless game before that, saw Cayman's Carson Fagan, who had recently come on, facing a one-on-one match-up with substitute goalkeeper Dwayne Kerr. Fagan carried the ball and drew both defenders and the 'keeper towards him before coolly slotting the ball square for fellow substitute Sanches to tap home.
