Cops report Kingfish success
published: Monday | November 22, 2004

THE POLICE are attributing major success to Operation Kingfish, the Counter Narcotics and Major Crime Investigation Task Force, launched just over a month ago.

They report that over 140 "actionable calls" have come in on the 811 toll free number. Those along with other information gathered from elsewhere so far have resulted in the following:

The recovery of seven stolen motor cars, including one recently stolen from the USA.

The seizure of 13 illegal firearms

The seizure of over 227 kilogrammes (500 lb) of compressed ganja.

The destruction of two sophisticated ganja fields.

The arrest of several persons for various offences, including murders and illegal possession of firearm. One of the persons arrested was wanted for the murder of a policeman, another man who was a suspect in a triple murder in Portmore, St. Catherine has also been apprehended.

Kingfish is also responsible for the seizure in Caribbean waters of several go-fast boats and almost eight tons of cocaine destined for Jamaica.

The police said a major team, supported by international partners has been formed to provide a professional investigative response to highly organised criminal networks. An anti-extortion strategy is also being developed to counter the multi-million dollar illegal activity.
