THE MINISTRY of Justice has completed the formal presentation of some 4,500 official seals to active Justices of the Peace (JPs) islandwide.
This heralds a new era in the delivery of justice, as the Ministry seeks to regain integrity, transparency and the public's confidence in the office of Justice of the Peace.
The series of events marked an historic occasion for Jamaica, being the only island in the English speaking Caribbean where JPs now hold official seals of office.
These seals came into effect on August 30, 2004, and are the only legal instruments to be used by JPs in authenticating documents.
The Ministry will embark on an islandwide media campaign to inform and familiarise the public about the new seals.
JPs who are eligible, and have not received seals, are being advised to make contact with the Custos of their respective parishes, to ensure that they are in possession of these official instruments.
