THE EDITOR, Sir:THE REVELATION of Air Jamaica's financial problems and its huge unpaid tax liabilities should be welcome news to the average citizen who craves transparency in government activities.
There have been written complaints to the media for years about these unpaid taxes to the point where, apparently, they could no longer be ignored.
Arguments about the indispensability of the airline to the tourist industry do not hold water.
This airline is a money-losing luxury that this poor country cannot afford and the proposed government exchange of unpaid taxes for equity is accounting hocus pocus since the assets of this failing airline have dubious value.
Leased aircraft are not owned assets, for example. Foreign air carriers can easily replace this white elephant.
I am, etc.
