If 'Butch' Stewart can get a tax deal, then why can't I?
published: Friday | November 26, 2004

STEWART

THE EDITOR, Sir:

RIGHT NOW, I am having a hard time meeting my expenses. My income has not kept with inflation and the added costs of security and fuel.

The security guards in my apartment complex have asked for a raise of pay because terrorists on the streets of Kingston may attack. The cost of fuel which is 60 per cent of my light bill and 100 per cent of my vehicle's fuel bill is constantly rising; not to mention the cost of upkeep of my vehicle.

Hence, I am requesting a moratorium on salary deductions for income tax, education tax, National Housing Trust tax and National Insurance Scheme tax until the situation with crime and the cost of fuel stabilises. In exchange, I will swap the amount of tax owed for an equity stake in my household furniture and vehicle. Let it never be said that I owe taxes and neglect them.

I am more than willing to sign an agreement to this effect, and if I happen to lose my furniture or vehicle, I will not have any regrets. And please, let it not be said that I am cheating the government out of taxes.

I am, etc.,

A FAR TOO RESPONSIBLE TAXPAYER
