THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT IS with interest that I read your Wednesday Business edition of November 3, 2004. An article captioned 'Tax shake-up
needed', by Staff Reporter Andrew Green, had a special
resonance.
In it, Mr. Tony Jenkinson, managing partner of the respected firm of attorneys, Nunes, Schofield and Deleon, made reference to the country's need for a "commercial dispute resolution mechanism."
The report credited to Mr. Jenkinson clearly highlights a sentiment we at the Dispute Resolution Foundation can appreciate. However, it points to the considerable education which still has to be done.
The Dispute Resolution Foundation, celebrating its 10th year of service to Jamaica and the region, incubated by, among others, the Jamaican Bar Association, is just the mechanism Mr. Jenkinson would seek to establish. For years we have had a roster of qualified mediators very active in the Supreme Court of Jamaica and in the commerce of Jamaica. We have had admirable success in offering quality dispute resolution not only in Jamaica but the Caribbean at large.
I would invite Mr. Jenkinson to provide me with a forum to expand on our current services and to even share some anecdotes with the members of his firm to whom we have been of service.
I am, etc.,
