published: Friday | November 26, 2004

ELDEMIRE-SHEARER

CHAIRMAN OF the National Council on senior citizens, Dr. Denise Eldemire-Shearer wants Jamaicans to show greater appreciation for the contribution senior citizens have made and continue to make to the country's development.

She said that no longer must anyone see senior citizens as burdens on the society but as some of the main architects of a more peaceful and better society.

Dr. Eldemire-Shearer said, "They contribute to environmental and other aspects of development. They have not only helped to build our nation but continues to contribute to nation building." "They are also the backbone of our churches. Our seniors are positive contributors to the fabric of this country's development", she added.

GRADUATION

Dr. Eldemire-Shearer was guest speaker at the recent Graduation and Awards Cere-mony for senior citizens volunteers and teachers in St. Ann at the Northview Church of Christ in St. Ann's Bay.

In congratulating the graduates for completing their computer courses, she singled out the seniors for their desire to become computer literate.

"It is very important that in this technological age that you are developing computer skills. We are truly fulfilling our mission of developing a society for all ages.

The computer course was organised by the St. Ann branch of the National Council for senior citizens in collaboration with the St. Ann Parish Library, The Early Childhood Unit and Sandals Dunns River Hotel and Spa.

Dr. Eldemire-Shearer urged the senior citizens to continue to stand up for the old time values that will be able to bridge the gap between them and the younger ones.
