THE EDITOR, Sir:
THERE IS a radio feature which I believe is called 'Places To Visit', in which Jamaican places of interest are described.
I was amused to hear the very enthusiastic presenter referring to a site near Ian Fleming's 'Firefly' as the place where "the original James Bond, Sean Connery, did much of his bird watching."
The "original James Bond" of the ornithology department of the Academy of Natural Sciences and author of Checklist of The Birds of the West Indies did bird-watch in that area, but of course he and actor Sean Connery are not one and the same.
The confusion arises because author Ian Fleming, in searching for a strong exciting name for his fictional hero, became convinced that the name of the respected ornithology had just the right ring to it, and adopted it.
Perhaps the confusion is heightened by the fact that ornithologist, the "original James Bond" and the fictional spy James Bond both fancied 'birds'.
I am, etc
