Ja fugitive nabbed, gun, ganja found
published: Monday | November 29, 2004

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

A JAMAICAN fugitive who has been implicated in a major drug operation in South Carolina, United States, was arrested on extradition warrants last Thursday, during a joint operation between members of the Organised Crime Investigative Division (OCID) and the Area Three Narcotics team.

Reports are that the 41-year-old fugitive, Seaton Letts, who uses several aliases, was cornered in the small and quiet farming district of Allison in Manchester. According to the police, a .380 semi-automatic pistol, along with two pounds of ganja were found in his possession.

CHARGED JOINTLY

He was found in the company of an American woman, Maxine Mitchum, who the police say is his children's mother. Both have since been charged jointly in relation to the illegal firearm and ganja. They are scheduled to appear in the Manchester Resident Magistrate's Court on December 3. Mr. Letts is booked to appear in the Corporate Area Criminal Court on November 29 to face extradition charges.

It is alleged that between January 1995 and August 2002 Mr. Letts co-conspired to transport multiple kilogrammes of powdered cocaine in the Kings Tree area of Williams Bay County, South Carolina.

DRUG RUNNING

Speaking with The Gleaner yesterday, a member of OCID said investigations by the local authorities in South Carolina have led to the arrest of persons who were involved in the drug running, some of whom have given statements, implicating Mr. Letts.

Further allegations are that during the investigation, Mr. Letts fled the United States to Jamaica, hiding out in his home town. Members of the Jamaica Fugitive Apprehen-sion Team (JFAT), working in collaboration with their American counterparts, swooped down on the remote district and apprehended Mr. Letts.
