THE EDITOR, Sir:MANY PROUD parents sat in theatre-type seats in air-conditioned comfort at the brightly lit conference centre on Friday, Nov 19, to celebrate the Wolmer's Boy's School graduation and prize-giving ceremony.
Hundreds of students from grades one to the ultra smart, maroon and gold-jacketed graduating class were honoured for academic achievements. Special awards for sport prowess, good sportsmanship, service to community, service and loyalty and (my personal favourite) gentlemanly conduct were a few of the many honours presented for exemplary behaviour outside the academic. Alumnae awards and The Headmaster's Cup were also presented.
Mr. Myrie addresses his students as 'gentlemen' and, indeed, they strive to be so. Their behaviour throughout the four-hour ceremony was exemplary, even though the microphone volume was annoyingly low. Piped classical music played softly in the background adding to the classy (no pun intended) ambiance.
I started to daydream that Mr. Myrie was the prime minister and his staff the cabinet ministers under him. Jamaica was as it was 20 years ago. But a hearty rendition of the school song brought me back to reality.
A reality that with Wolmer's producing well-disciplined, educated, proud young men like this, there is hope for the future. Congratulations Mr. Myrie, your able and dedicated staff and 'gentlemen'.
I am, etc.,
N. STEWART
