Maxwell's Arlington spring late surprise
published: Thursday | December 2, 2004

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

STRUGGLING CONSTANT Spring conceded an 89th minute goal enabling Arlington United to earn a valuable point in yesterday's 2-2 draw in their Wray and Nephew National Premier League game at The Spring Complex.

Arlington, with new coach Jeffrey Maxwell at the helm, twice came from behind to earn a crucial point away from home in the battle of the relegation-threatened teams.

Two drastic defensive errors by captain and new sweeper, Fabian Watkins, allowed Arlington back in the game on both occasions.

BEAUTIFUL FREE KICK

Carl Brown had given Constant Spring the lead in the 39th minute but substitute Locksley Thompson, standing little more than four feet tall, quickly levelled the scores in comical fashion. He outpaced Watkins and another defender in the 65th minute before Carlos Williams curled a beauty of a free kick to restore Constant Spring's lead.

Then Watkins miskicked and allowed Zico Herrera to equalise with a minute of normal time remaining. The Constant Spring skipper was distraught and unconsolable knowing very well that those two points lost could cost his team in the long run.

Both teams are on six points and struggling at the bottom of the pack.

Danny Lyn, Constant Spring's technical director, lamented his team's lack of ability to finish off opponents when it mattered most.

"This thing keeps on happening. It's not the first or second time," Lyn said.

TOTAL DOMINANCE

"Total dominance of the game and as always they don't get a shot on goal and we gave them two goals. The game should have been over by the first half. It was an easy, easy three points," said Lyn.

Meanwhile, Maxwell thought the game could have been won by either team.

"I thought the game could have gone any direction. I felt we should have scored at least two goals in the first 15 to 20 minutes," he said.

In his first game in charge, Maxwell pointed out that the players will take time to get accustomed to his style of play but was satisfied with a point.

"I am trying to bring something new to them and it will take time. The key factor is that we have gained a point away from home and I am hoping that we can improve from here," said the man who has coached more Premier League teams than the seven goals Arlington has scored for the season.

Some of Maxwell teams included Arnett and Tivoli Gardens, Waterhouse, Constant Spring, Reno, Village and now Arlington.
