WESTERN BUREAU:

FEBRUARY WILL be a busy month for high school track and field athletes in western Jamaica with a number of meets scheduled to be held in the region leading up to the VMBS National High Schools Championships the following month.

The steering committee of the County Of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA) set the dates for the various meets at a meeting held at Manning's School last Friday.

The calendar is set for Saturday, January 22 with the Mannings Field and Distance Meet in Sav-la-Mar, and will be expanded this season to include 100m sprints for all classes and a number of relay events.

FIELD EVENTS

Normally the meet would accommodate only field events and races of 800m and over but the organisers took the decision at the meeting to include the additional events in the interest of the season, which will be shorter than normal.

President of COCAA, Eldemire Smith told the meeting that since championships would be earlier than usual, every effort would be made to give the athletes as much exposure as possible.

The traditional Alpart/ STETHS Invitational in Santa Cruz will take place on January 29, and will be followed by the Girls Western Championships eliminations at Herbert Morrison on February 4.

ELIMINATIONS

The Boys Western Championship eliminations will be hosted by Cornwall College four days later with the finals set tentatively for the Catherine Hall mini stadium on February 15.

Between these events, the first major meet of the track season, the Milo Western Relays, will be held on February 12 and it is expected to attract the usual large turnout of top athletes and teams from all over the country.

Meanwhile, the annual general meting of COCAA will be held on January 6 at The Mannings School, and a new steering committee will be elected to run high school track and field in the region.
