LETTER OF THE DAY - Putting youth in the vanguard
published: Friday | December 3, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE TIME for change is now. The 'old brigade' can no longer carry on. They have failed for 40 years to solve the problems of the country.

It is refreshing to know the impact that the young people are having where our solutions for our challenges are concerned. Peace marches, positive demonstrations, without blocking roads or injuring anyone or causing disturbances in the inner gun-infested areas too are very noteworthy. Before this it was always a question of confrontation of "Who did this?" and "Who did that?"

War does not end war neither does fighting each other end fighting.

Crime, agricultural stagnation, shrinking industrial exports are three of the major challenges facing Jamaica now.

The young men and women of today are quite capable of facing the challenges and are suggesting solutions to move forward. I do recommend that Youth Councils be established in every county in Jamaica and their work be coordinated by young supervisors.

NATIONAL FRONT

The main purpose of this effort is to produce a national front against crime which includes drugs and violence and a positive approach where our production is concerned.

Individuals should think of how best they can single-han-dedly support themselves and work together to build a thriving, productive country. Parish-wise, country-wise and for the entire Jamaica, they must not listen to the politicians particularly the older ones who are now in a state of reverse thinking.

Young persons are always dealing with now and the future. Plans must be activated now for immediate and future benefits to individuals, bodies, groups and the country.

ONE-SIDED APPROACH

Let us dispense with the one-sided approach of 'some for this party, some for that party' as you will find that the same persons are always reaping the benefits while the young and up-coming ones are unable to even 'get a crumb which fell from the luscious table of the HAVES.'

The division of abundance for the most honourable, and the total lack for the most hungry and underprivileged must stop here and now.

We must work together. Always remember: "Black is Strength, Green is Growth; and Gold, the product of both."

I am, etc.,

ALONZO D. MANNING
