Honesty, the best policy

THE EDITOR, Sir:My heart was warmed on Tuesday, November 30, when I saw a story on the front page of The Gleaner entitled "Boy honoured for
honesty", written by Claudine Housen, staff reporter. The story was accompanied by a photograph of 12-year-old Daniel Scarlett, student of Holland High, receiving an embrace from his obviously very proud school principal, Mrs. Pauline Reid.
It is stories such as these, that make us realise that, amidst the gruesomeness of murder, mayhem, massacre, malice and the other ills in society, there still is that wellspring of virtue among our Jamaican people.
I wholeheartedly commend The Gleaner for giving well deserved prominence to this story, espousing proper values from a child. Daniel Scarlett's behaviour is exemplary and Holland High School will never be forgotten, I am sure, for such an outstanding act. Daniel indeed
handed over to the vice-principal, a wallet of money he found in the boys' bathroom at school. What is even more heartening is that, when asked how much money was in the wallet, he said simply that he did not know. Remarkable young man in these times! May this act inspire all of us to do the right things at all times.
I am, etc.,
