Powell hits half century
published: Sunday | December 5, 2004

SIDELINED WEST Indies fast bowler Daren Powell chalked up a half century on yesterday's third day of Jamaica's first trial match to help select the country's team for the 2005 regional Carib Beer Series at Jamaica Broilers.

Batting at number six, Powell scored 53 to help Carlton Baugh's XI to 208, this was in reply to David Bernard's XI's first innings total of 292.

Last man Dwight Stewart also chipped in with a useful 32. Melbourne's left-arm pacer Leon Bennett took 4-24 and Bevon Brown, who had two wickets overnight, ended with 2-50.

STRUGGLING

In its second knock, Bernard's side was struggling at 127 for six.

West Indies 'A' team wicketkeeper/batsman Keith Hibbert, 44, and captain Bernard, who has played one Test for the West Indies, with 27, along with first innings centurion Shawn Findlay, 20, were all back in the pavillion at the close.

Also out was Tamar Lambert, the Super Cup's top all-rounder. He made 17 while his club teammate, legspinner Odean Brown, had claimed 3-19.

Left-arm spinner Ryan Cunningham 1-3 and Danza Hyatt 1-5 supported Brown. The fourth and final day's play begins this morning at 10:00.
