AMBASSADOR ANTHONY Hylton, former minister of government and member of Parliament for St. Thomas Western, was selected unopposed as constituency chairman of Western St. Andrew on Sunday.

He replaced current People's National Party (PNP) member of Parliament O.T. Williams, who had indicated he would not be seeking to represent the constituency in the next general election, constitutionally due in 2007.

Mr. Hylton was elected by the executive committee of the Western St. Andrew constituency. He is one step away from representing the constituency in the next general election.

Speaking with The Gleaner yesterday, Mr. Hylton said his primary goal was to build the PNP organisational base in the constituency, as well as to reclaim the Duhaney Park seat in the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation the party lost last year.

SPECIAL ENVOY

Mr. Hylton is special envoy to the prime minister, in charge of national and regional energy policy, and the introduction of liquefied natural gas to Jamaica.

He said he also intends to implement developmental programmes in the constituency.

"There's a developmental deficit in the constituency, and you need a leader to work with the people to develop the constituency," he said, adding that integrity, commitment and vision are critical to lead this process.

Mr. Hylton represented Western St. Thomas between 1993 and 2002. He lost the constituency two years ago to the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) James Robertson in the 2002 General Election.
