Davies

Omar Anderson, Gleaner Writer

DR. OMAR DAVIES' official entry in the race to succeed P.J. Patterson as president of the People's National Party (PNP), and possibly as prime minister of Jamaica, has been well received by sections of the business community.

"We are glad we have a system that allows this vibrant participation by persons in the political arena," said Noel DaCosta, president of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC).

"Not only are we anticipating the debate among the contenders, but it is a good sign that the country's democracy is working."

On Tuesday, Dr. Davies, who is chairman of the People's National Party Region Three, launched his leadership bid at Cuddy'z Sports Bar and Grill in New Kingston. He joins PNP vice-presidents Portia Simpson Miller, Dr. Peter Phillips and Dr. Karl Blythe as the candidates to have so far declared an interest in leading the party in the post-Patterson era.

HEALTHY CONTEST EXPECTED

Dr. Andre Gordon, president of the Jamaica Exporters' Association (JEA), said it was healthy that the PNP had several contenders desiring to lead the party. "We expect there will be a healthy contest and that the best person will win," he said.

During the launch on Tuesday, Dr. Davies, who is also the Member of Parliament for South St. Andrew, invited persons to join his team to build a stronger economy, to ensure that all children have access to education, and to seek an answer to reduce crime and violence.

Beverley Lopez, president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ), echoed comments similar to her business colleagues. "It must augur well for this country when the option is greater," she said. "The more candidates we have from whatever party who can articulate a good vision for the country it bodes well for the future." She added that Dr. Davies has been known for his "single-mindedness".
