THE ST. JAMES Parish Council has spearheaded an exercise to remove 114 derelict vehicles, identified for removal and disposal at the municipal dump, from the public roadways throughout the parish.
The sustained programme, which got under way on Sunday, is being carried out in collaboration with the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) and is guided by the Road Traffic Act. According to chairman of the Council, Mayor Noel Donaldson, 30 such abandoned vehicles were removed in the first instance from Lower Bevin Avenue, Humber Avenue, Water Lane, Walpole Lane, Roosevelt Avenue, Barnett View, Peace View, Churchill and Barnett lanes.
"The programme is aimed at stricter enforcement of public safety laws and regulations and beautifying the public thoroughfare," Mayor Donaldson said.
"The removal of derelict vehicles from the public roadway is part of the council's effort to maintain public order across the parish," adding that derelict vehicles assist in blighting the aesthetics of communities.
