Congratulating Portia's speech
published: Friday | December 10, 2004
THE EDITOR, Sir:I BEG to use this medium to congratulate the Minister of Local Government the Portia Simpson-Miller on a speech she gave at the opening of three parochial roads, recently rehabilitated in the parish of St. Ann at a cost of $92 million, and another speech at a Sunday ecumenical service at Emancipation Square Spanish Town.
Both speeches are to be commended for their down-to-earth common sense. The minister wants to see more focus placed on rural development so as to provide greater economic opportunities for residents of rural communities especially small farmers. She mentioned roads, better educational facilities etc.
In my neck of the woods, Great Bay in the parish of St. Elizabeth, we only hear of the billions and millions being spent in the more developed areas. Our road is a disgrace; more pot holes than road. We need a road so we can get to lands that need to be put into production, and a good drainage system for the ponds. We are law abiding citizens paying taxes and other essential bills.
Why can't some of the billions find its way to Great Bay?
I am, etc.,
