Pryce's error
published: Friday | December 10, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN THE Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) saga, Raymond Pryce made two errors, one of which he cannot control he is young; the second was to choose to give impeccable service in a public sector, which very often seemingly reveres mediocrity and spurns brilliance in youth.

Unfortunately, there are some people in the public sector who consider young bright professionals like Pryce a threat to their own so-called tenure. They will resent youth and skilful application of knowledge and will ignore advice and recommendation to the organisation's peril in order to maintain the pecking order.

The CAC boss still needs to answer one very critical question. If she was advised that the integrity of the data gathered was questionable, why then were they handed over to the Minister of Technology?

The Minister himself needs to answer the question: why did he not write to those at whom fingers were pointed and hear their defence before authorising a press release on the matter? After all, he no longer has the luxury of youthful exuberance on his part.

Whichever way this saga pans out, clearly, Raymond Pryce is the mocking bird in all of this. He is being penalised for his competence, while others are seemingly excused for their apparent arrogance and ineptness a dangerous combination.

I am, etc.,

CHARLENE DEVERAUX
