'Ten'shun, it's party time!
published: Friday | December 10, 2004

By Daviot Kelly, Staff Reporter

A CHILL WIND blew through the grounds of Up Park Camp on Friday night but it did not deter guests from enjoying the Jamaica Defence Force's reception.

Chief of Staff Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin and his charming wife Tessa Lewin, welcomed all to the Flagstaff Officers Mess for an evening of fine food and wine. The seams were sharp and the shoes were spotless as the members of the armed forces were dressed in full regalia for the event. The food stations and bars were all decorated like camouflaged tents, adding to the military decor.

GUESTS OF HONOUR

Four times the military police escorted a vehicle to the entrance; four times the honoured occupant was saluted as they exited. Minister of National Security Dr. Peter Phillips and wife Sandra, followed by Governor-General of Jamaica, Sir Howard Cooke, Opposition Leader Edward Seaga and Prime Minister P.J. Patterson were the undoubted guests of honour. A number of former brigadiers and ex-servicemen came to party with those who are just making their career.

The Military Band's performance was as flawless as their attire. Their song collection included "My girl", "The way you do the things you do", "Superstition", "Stop in the name of love" and "Copacabana" before coming back to do a medley of Christmas carols; remembering the reason for the season.
