DESEREE DELANCY became the newest parish councillor in Westmoreland after a brief swearing-in ceremony inside the Savanna-la-Mar Anglican Church Hall on Thursday, December 9. The new councillor, who decisively won the Bethel Town by-election two weeks ago, repeated the oath of allegiance before a packed Chamber consisting of close relatives, friends and party supporters.
CHALLENGES ARE MANY
"I know the challenges are many and the resources limited but I will be doing my best to address some of the many problems in the Bethel Town Division," said the new councillor, who identified his priorities as repairs to poor road conditions, improvement in the water supply system, the provision of training facilities and an assault on youth unemployment.
Thirty-four-year-old Delancy, an agricultural sales representative, said he was honoured to be part of the Westmoreland Parish Council with its proud record of achievement. He said he would be relying on the experience and guidance of his older colleagues to steer him along.
DIFFERENT ACT TO FOLLOW
Mayor Delford Morgan who conducted the swearing-in ceremony, welcomed Delancy, charging him to take on the mantle left by the late Cleveland 'Singer' Brown. "You have a different act to follow but we're confident you will rise to the occasion," the Mayor said.
Speaking on behalf of the JLP members of the council, Councillor Keith Barnes welcomed him and said he was sure the new councillor would make a positive contribution to the council's deliberations.
