Exorbitant JPS bills
published: Tuesday | December 14, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I LEFT the island on July 18, 2004 and my landlord requested and obtained a final reading from the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) for that month which was $275. I returned to the island on September 16 to a house without electricity compliments of 'Ivan'. Electricity was restored on the following day.

To my surprise I got a bill the end of September for $2,106.64 for the period August 4 to September 3. It must be noted that I live alone and no one occupied my house for that period and everything was disconnected.

Now for the life of me, I do not know where they got that reading from because of course they charged me for 180 kwh.

I called the Port Maria office and even before I could explain my situation fully I was rudely told: "Ma'am, you must pay, or your supply will be disconnected". I told her to go right ahead and face a court issue. It was then she listened and put my account on hold. My October bill came and the cost was $788.82 !

Can you imagine that?! If you are not prepared to do battle with these people, you cower in fear and walk around dressed in fig leaves just to pay these exorbitant JPS bills.

I am, etc.,
