Jamaica survive physical battle
published: Tuesday | December 14, 2004

IN WHAT manager Arlene Findlay described as "a very physical game", Jamaica's Under-16 netballers yesterday scored their second consecutive win at the Caribbean Netball Association Youth Championships in St. Lucia.

The Oberon Pitterson-coached young Sunshine Girlz pulled off a 30-11 win over the hosts after registering quarterly scores of 10-2, 14-7 and 18-9. Chief goal shooter Romelda Aikens, whom Findlay said was kept off court for nearly 20 minutes after being hit in the face by a St. Lucian defender, was Jamaica's heaviest scorer, sinking 13 goals from 18 tries.

Her team's captain, Michelle Murray, registered a second consecutive 100 per cent shooting average, dumping four goals from four tries. Crystal Grant, who shot 6 from 9 and Vanessa Walker, with 7 from 12, also contributed to the demolition exercise.

The Jamaican starting team read: GS Romelda Aiken , GA Vanessa Walker (Crystal Grant), WA Nicole Johnson, C Michelle Murray, WD Trishelle Williams, GD Lasania Mattis, GK Afrike Morris.

On Sunday, the Girlz scored a 40-22 win over St. Kitts as they got out of the blocks in the sprint race for a sixth regional title.

Said Findlay of the team's performance: "The girls played better today but the opponents were very physical.

"The scoreline was that way because Romenda Aiken was out of the game for 20 minutes with a bloody nose," she added.

Scoring for St. Lucia were Michelle Philbert (6/10), Denise Charles (3/10), and Thiona Augustin (2/3).

Findlay has promised a goal feast when the Girlz take on under-performing St. Martin today.

St. Martin's scored just one point apiece in their first two games, while they have conceded a barrage of goals. They were blown away 60-1 by Antigua and Barbuda on Saturday and 55-1 against Barbados on Sunday.

Dominica and St. Kitts also registered victories yesterday, the third evening of the championship at the Vigie Multi-Sports Complex. Antigua and Barbuda had their two-game winning streak snapped by St. Kitts, who edged them 28-26, and Dominica secured their first win when they beat St. Martin 46-6.
