More care needed in media
published: Thursday | December 16, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

OUR DAILY atrocious criminal acts are not to be lauded. I could not have been more upset, than I was yesterday evening (December 13), while listening to the news on a popular radio station.

My mind was perturbed when the reporter announced that he would play an audio clip with comments of residents who are sympathetic with the soldier who went on a shooting rampage in Allman Town on December 12, which traumatised five members of the West family.

I am reluctant even to quote the clip. How the young lady dealt with the relationship might have been wrong, but regardless of the circumstances, no one has the right to harm or take the life of others.

I was a bit relieved when this popular radio station realised they had erred, and in an effort to redeem themselves, apologised. I may be wrong, but is it not the responsibility of the media to check every audio and video clip to ensure that they meet national broadcasting standard before they play them?

The media need to shake up.

I am, etc.,
