THE EDITOR, Sir: I WAS walking in Half-Way Tree recently when I saw someone dispose of his garbage right at his feet. I felt most disgusted at the thought that one could not only be so nasty, but inconsiderate of others. What is most disquieting about this behaviour is to think of some of the places garbage is thrown.
One might defend this inclination to litter by saying that there are "garbage collectors" whose job is to "clean up the place", but which 'garbage collector' should go searching for a drink box that is well crushed and forced into the cracks on a wall? This is total exploitation and blatant disregard of valuable people in our society.
We should be grateful that we actually have a garbage disposal system in Jamaica, rather than having to dispose of our own litter! But wouldn't that be nice? At least then when we throw our waste in the gullies and block the drains, we wouldn't have the impudence to go on T.V. demanding that the M.P. cleans them, or that "we want justice"!
It's high time that we follow our granny's admonition and "tek pride in weself" and respect each other. We all must take responsibility for our own waste.
I am, etc.,
